ABC’s of Women Bible Heroes (& some other truths too) was born from two goals: to honor the women of the Bible, whose stories reflect an entire half of God’s heart, and to speak truth into interpretations of Scripture that have too often been used to limit women from preaching, teaching, leading, and sharing the love of God’s Word.

The writing needed to be playful enough for young readers while still carrying the bigger ideas, which meant distilling each woman, story, or truth into just a few lines.

I developed the illustration style alongside the writing, with character, typography, color, scale, and composition all contributing to the details of the storytelling, from one letter to the next.

While the characters are simply illustrated, I paid close attention to body language, features, clothing, race, and cultural context so each story felt thoughtfully and truthfully represented. It was important that they didn’t feel like distant figures from an old story. I wanted readers to be able to see themselves in these women.

This was a self-initiated project, so I carried it through the entire process. From the original concept and manuscript through illustration, page design, cover design, production, and self-publication.
