Are you excited for the new year? I really am. Though it may seem like just a date change, it’s important to recognize these moments, and let your season be marked by the calendar change. To evaluate where you are, and where you want to be/do/change/see in order to keep growing.
My problem has been (and it seems to be the norm these days,) trying to do to many things at once. This was especially prevalent in how I used to approach my resolutions and goals for the New Year.
We think that we can multi-task, (and I’m going to get nerdy for a minute,) but due to limited channels of processing in our brains, we physically can't do two complicated tasks at once. For most of our functions as a human being, you're processors are switching back and forth between tasks. You might be switching fast, but eventually one of the tasks, if not both, are going to suffer for lack of complete concentration.
So instead of overwhelming myself and trying to implement 30 new habits at once, I decided to apply some User Experience principles to my year and take a simpler approach!
I made a fun, free ‘Focus Planner’ for 2019, and it works like this:
Each month has a ‘Focus point’, a topic/theme for the month that you concentrate your energy solely around.
Each ‘Focus Point’ has two ‘Measurable Outcomes’, these are actual, measurable actions that have success criteria attached to them. (These are not ongoing to-do lists, these are things that you are expecting yourself to complete within your themed focal point!)
Each ‘Outcome’ has four ‘Steps’ You can use these steps as details on how you will reach/complete your outcome.
An example for the month might look like this:
Focus point: Health
Measurable outcome #1: Run 3 Miles straight
Run one mile each day, adding half a mile on to the total each week
Evaluate my diet, make sure I’m getting the proper food for that level of energy
Get proper running shoes
Drink 8 Glasses of water a day
Simple as that! Fun thing about having a new focal point each month is your goal stays fresh in your mind, and you can build on the success and momentum of the completed month before!
Hang it on a clipboard, tack it to the wall, hang it from a craft stick, (like I did) or sit it in a nice picture frame!
